Economic Minister Wang Mei-hua says TSMC’s semiconductor chip manufacturing capabilities can’t be replicated by other companies. Wang spoke with lawmakers on Tuesday about the impact of new US export controls on Chinese chipmakers.
The US is trying to slow China’s technological and military progress by requiring licenses before US exports can be shipped to advanced chip production facilities in China. China is still behind Taiwan, South Korea and the United States in manufacturing the most advanced semiconductor chips. The new rules bar exports to China of American manufacturing equipment needed to produce advanced chips.
Minister Wang says the new US restrictions won’t have a big impact on Taiwan’s semiconductor companies. Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Company (TSMC) received a one-year license to continue ordering American chip making equipment for its manufacturing facility in Nanjing.
Wang also says no other company in the world can currently replicate TSMC’s high end chipmaking capabilities.
